Exploring Connemara

There are few places as rewarding to explore as Connemara. The Sky Road drive is a must, offering panoramic views of the coastline, islands, and mountains. It’s a route that feels timeless, and whether you’re driving or cycling, you’ll want to stop often just to take it all in.

If you’d like to get active, Clifden Bike Shop or Mannion Bike Hire in Clifden provides bikes for all ages, perfect for a spin along the Connemara Greenway, a safe and scenic route ideal for both seasoned cyclists and those just out for a leisurely ride.

If you’d rather be on the water than beside it, Real Adventures Connemara offers guided kayaking and paddleboarding trips, along with a range of coastal activities. It’s a wonderful way to spot seals and soak up the calm of the Atlantic. For those visiting with children or grandchildren, they also run family-friendly sessions that make the most of the great outdoors.

No visit would be complete without a walk in Connemara National Park. The trail up Diamond Hill is particularly rewarding with well-maintained paths and spectacular views from the top. It's not too strenuous, and you can choose shorter or longer routes depending on your energy on the day.

Day Trips: Islands & Abbeys

Summer is prime time for island hopping, and Inishbofin is just a short ferry ride from Cleggan Pier. The island is small but mighty, with walking trails, birdwatching, gorgeous beaches, and a strong sense of history and culture. It’s worth making a day of it, so bring a picnic and your swimmers.

Back on the mainland, Kylemore Abbey is always worth a visit. Set against a lake and mountain backdrop, the neo-Gothic abbey and its Victorian walled gardens are beautifully maintained. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and a lovely spot for tea and a stroll.

What’s On This Summer

Summer is when the region truly comes alive. August brings the world-famous Connemara Pony Show, celebrating its remarkable 100th year in 2025. This event is a  must for horse lovers and anyone curious about the region’s unique equine heritage.

For something more sea-sprayed, the Roundstone Regatta in July blends traditional boat races with food, music, and a strong sense of community. Then as summer begins to wind down, the Clifden Arts Festival (September) fills every corner of the town with poetry, performance, exhibitions, and music. This festival is one of Ireland’s longest-running and most cherished arts festivals.

Right next door to us, Steam is always a favourite. It’s a lively spot for lunch, with fresh salads, sandwiches, and bakes that never miss the mark and the coffee is just as good. Perfect for grabbing a bite before exploring the town.
